Praksisveiledning av studenter på grunnskolelærerutdanning

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how teacher students of primary and lower secondary school use the guidance in their practice periods to develop their understanding of the teacher profession. The problem “how does guidance during primary and lower secondary school practice contribute to develop students´ understanding of the profession?” is the basis of the study. The empirical material consists of interviews with six students of Norwegian general teacher education. This study has a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Further is the method semi structured interview. The analysis is structured by three questions connected to the study, whereas the discussion part is structured by discoveries in the analysis. The theoretical approach of the study is based on theory related to professionalism in the teacher profession, with focus on the concepts education (the Norwegian concept “danning”) and reflection. Further the content of guidance in practice is illuminated, mainly represented by the guidance strategy “act and reflection” (Handal og Lauvås, 2000). In the theoretical approach there will also be a focus on the concepts technique and pedagogical practice. The theory part ends with a presentation of current relevant science represented by Anne Grete Solstad (2013) and Liv Sundli (2001). Discoveries from the empirical material reveal that the students find reflection important. On the other hand, the students do have a rather unclear opinion on what reflection actually involve. Further it is revealed that the reflection is mainly at a level of act (the Norwegian concept “handlingsnivå”). It is also revealed that the students are to some point critical to their practice teachers. Nevertheless, they express themselves as being loyal to their supervisors. The empirical material also contents discoveries revealing absence of theory in the practical part of the general teacher education. Hence the discoveries in this study, one could conclude with this: The focus on the meaning of the reflection among students and practice teachers during guidance should be increased. An increment of this focus can result in a better development considering the understanding of the teacher profession for students.
