This paper presents an evaluation study of an educational model implemented in a distant learning nursing education part-time program. The intervention included the teaching methods characteristic for the program; the learning management system (LMS) Fronter, online lectures, mandatory work requirements, peer collaboration, and on-campus sessions. The objectives of the project are described in four categories, student satisfaction, student throughput, examination marks, and number of applicants. The overall aim of the study is to improve distant learning courses in Hedmark University College. Main results: Students were generally satisfied with the use of Fronter, online lectures, mandatory work requirements, peer collaboration and on-campus sessions. The distance learning students were more satisfied with LMS than students in the regular study program. There are challenges in using LMS in ways which strengthen students’ motivation and promotes collaborative learning. Advances in knowledge about how students experience the oncampus sessions is needed. Student throughput was the same for the students at the distance learning program and the regularly study program. Numbers of applicants for the distance learning program have increased by 40 % in three years and is higher compared with the regularly study program. There were no significant differences in scores on the Anatomy – biology – physiology exam for the two groups. About 60 % of the part-time students stated they would not have applied a regular on-campus nursing education program.
