Abstract

Otravassdraget er periodevis forsuret. Forsuringsnivået er direkte relatert til vannføringsbidrag fra nedbørfeltet nedstrøms Byglandsfjorden. Når dette restfeltet bidrar til >60% av vannføringen på anadrom strekning av elva vil pH kunne falle ned mot 5.4. Dette er pH-verdier som indikerer kritiske vannkvaliteter for f.eks. laks. Årlig forekommende episoder med lav pH kan forklare både lav yngeloverlevelse og gjellevevsforandringene hos smolt som er påvist i tidligere undersøkelser. Dagens forsuringsnivå vil kunne forsinke reetablering av en stedegen laksestamme og vil kunne forhindre jevn fangst av tilbakevandrende laks. Reetablering av en permanent og stabil laksebestand kan oppnås raskt dersom vannkvaliteten ble forbedret. Det anbefales at det etableres en doserer i Beiarhølen oppstrøms Venneslafjorden. Avsyring kan oppnås ved bruk av silikat eller kalk. Disse ansees som likeverdige som avsyringsmiddel. Utgifter til avsyringsmiddel er anslått til ca 2 mill kr. årlig. I tillegg kommer kostnader til etablering av dosereringsanlegg samt årlige driftskostander.
