Abstract

Månedlige analyser av overflatevannet i Sørfjorden i 1999, med hovedvekt på tungmetaller (sink, kadmium, bly, kopper og kvikksølv) viste at forholdene var preget av uhellsutslipp ved Norzink as. Høye konsentrasjoner av sink og kadmium i mai skyldtes utpumping i Eitrheimsvågen av sterkt metallholdig vann fra en kum. Dette ga en kraftig forurensning i hele Sørfjorden og sannsynligvis også økning i Hardangerfjorden. I april viste overflatevannet økt forurensning med kvikksølv og i desember økte nivåene av kvikksølv igjen. Denne gangen er økningen forklart med lekkasjer fra en sump som mottar kvikksølvholdig vann. Denne lekkasjen fortsatte til ut i februar år 2000. I 1999 har således vært et år preget av betydelig metallforurensning i Sørfjorden. Ettersom de ekstraordinære tilførslene har skjedd til overflatevannet vil spredningen av forurenset vann bli stor og de biologiske konsekvensene vil være størst for organismer som lever på grunt vann (f.eks. blåskjell og andre dyr i tangbeltet).
