Abstract

Vannkjemisk overvåking av innsjøer i Sør-Varanger har de siste årene vist klar utvikling mot lavere sulfatverdier og økende pH. I perioden 1987-1994 har midlere sulfatkonsentrasjon for 6 småvann på Jarfjordfjellet gått ned med ca. 25 %, midlere pH har økt fra 5.0 til 5.2 og labilt aluminium er gått ned fra 70 til 40 µg/l. I de 9 større overvåkingssjøene øst for Kirkenes har midlere pH økt fra 5.7 til 5.9 i perioden 1989 til 1994. Årsaken er redusert svoveldeposisjon som følge av reduserte utslipp fra Pechenganickel. Overvåkingen har vist at innsjøene i området viser en rask forbedring i vannkvalitet når svoveldeposisjonen reduseres. Konsentrasjonene av nikkel og kobber i innsjøene viser ingen klar endring. På grunn av store akkumulerte mengder av nikkel og kobber i jordsmonn og innsjøsedimenter, kan man ikke forvente like rask reaksjon i innsjøene ved redusert tungmetalldeposisjon som ved redusert svoveldeposisjon.
