Abstract

Vannkjemisk overvåking av innsjøer i Sør-Varanger viser nå en tendens mot redusert sulfatverdier og økende pH. I perioden 1990-1993 økte middelverdien av pH for de 9 mest belastede overvåkingssjøene fra 5.7 til 5.9. Årsaken er trolig redusert produksjon av Pechenganickel. Konsentrasjonene av nikkel og kobber i de samme innsjøene viser ingen endring. Målinger av tungmetaller i sedimenterende matriale i innsjøer viser en økende tendens. Undersøkelser av tungmetallinnhold i torvprofiler fra nedbørsmyrer i grenseområdene viser en meget sterk anrikning av kobber og nikkel. I de øverste 2.5 cm av torva er konsentrasjonene fra 100 til 700 ganger høyere enn på 30 cm dyp.
