Abstract

Otravassdraget har vært sterkt påvirket av forsuring gjennom mange tiår. I tilløpselvene fra øst og vest har fiskebestanden stort sett forsvunnet eller blitt sterkt redusert. Den verneverdige laksestammen, bleka, i Byglandsfjorden sluttet å produsere omkring 1970. Det er antatt at forsuring er en viktig årsak til dette. antatt at forsuring er en viktig årsak til dette. For å sikre god vannkvalitet i hovedelva ved innløp til Byglandsfjorden og redusere faren for sure episoder på strekningen Bykil - Brokke er det beregnet et årlig kalkbehov på 4800 tonn kalk. Kostandene til kalk er anslått til 2,5 mill. kr. det anbefales oppkalking av Byglandsfjorden det første året med 3150 tonn kalk til anslagsvis 1,6 mill. kr. anslagsvis 1,6 mill. kr. For å sikre god vannkvalitet for laks nedstrøms Vigeland er det beregnet et ytterligere kalkbehov på 7400 tonn årlig, til en anslått kostnad på 3,7 mill. kr. Dette målnivået sikrer pH på 6,5 i smoltifiseringsperioden (feb-jun) og på 6,2 ellers i året. Kostnader til innkjøp/leie og oppføring av kalkdoserere kommer i tillegg.
