Abstract

Overvåkingen av Sørfjorden og Hardangerfjorden i 1991 viste betydelig reduksjon i konsentrasjonene av tungmetaller i vannmassene i forhold til 1990 til tross for små endringer i utslippssituasjonen. Unntak var høye nivåer av kvikksølv i overflatevannet, spesielt i september. I dypvannet (200 m) er nå nivåene tilnærmet normale. Analyser av tungmetaller i bunnsedimentene viste størst forbedring i området Tyssedal - Odda, sammenlignet med 1985. Dette henger sammen med større naturlig overdekking med uforurensede sedimenter her enn lenger ute i fjorden. I Hardangerfjorden vil det derfor ta lenger tid å redusere nivåene av metaller i sedimentene enn i Sørfjorden på grunn av liten sedimenttilvekst. Det ble påvist små endringer i nivåene av organisk miljøgifter i sedimentene siden 1985, noe som indikerer uendrede tilførsler. Orienterende dioksinanalyser indikerer ingen lokale kilder.
