Abstract

Konklusjonene av en bredt anlagt undersøkelse av eutrofitilstanden i Grenlandsfjordene i 1988-89 er som følger: Store utslippsreduksjoner siden midten av 1970-tallet har gitt positive effekter på Frierfjordens siktedyp, oksygenforhold og algesamfunnene i strandsonen. Belastningen er imidlertidig fortsatt stor, og klare effekter av overgjødsling merkes i overflatelaget både innenfor og utenfor Brevik. Utslippene til fjorden er ytterligere redusert siden undersøkelsen ble gjennomført og flere utslippsreduserende tiltak utredes. De største miljøforbedringer vil oppnås ved reduksjon av tilførsler av fosfor og organisk stoff. Nytteverdien av reduksjoner av nitrogenutslippene er usikker, men belastningen er høy og bør reduseres. Avløpsvannet fra Knardalstrand renseanlegg og Hydro Porsgrunn bør innlagres i Frierfjordens intermedsiære vannlag.
