Abstract

Det er anvendt en matematisk modell for Grenlandsfjordene som beskriver hvordan mengden av planteplankton og siktedyp i overflatelaget, samt oksygenforhold i dypvannet påvirkes av utslipp av fosfor og oppløst og partikulært organisk materiale til Frierfjorden. Modellen er oppbygget av generelle beskrivelser av fysiske og biokjemiske prosesser. Noen få konstanter er kalibrert mot måledata fra fjordområdet. Tilførsler av fosfor fra Frierfjorden via Langesundsfjorden til Ormefjorden skjer i hovedsak som fosfat og fosfor bundet til brakkvannsplankton. Effekten av denne tilførselen er forholdsvis liten mht. midlere siktedyp og sedimentering av organisk materiale i dypvannet. En halvering av fosfortilførselen til Frierfjorden vil imidlertid omtrent halvere konsentrasjonen av planteplankton i overflatelaget under store planktonoppblomstringer og dermed gi klart forbedret siktedyp. På den annen side kan større siktedyp medføre en mindre økning i oksygenforbruket i dypvannet, men i praksis er dette usikkert pga. stor innflytelse fra nabofjordene.
