Abstract

Undersøkelsen omfatter næringssalter og planteplankton i Grenlandsfjordene overflatelag 1988-1989. Området var preget av høy belastning av nitrogenforbindelser til Frierfjorden. Nitrogenkonsentrasjonen minket utover i fjordsystemet, mens fosforkonsentrasjonen ofte øket p.g.a. innblanding av sjøvann fra dypere lag. Kortvarige sommeroppblomstringer av alger forekom i Frierfjorden, men som regel var algeforekomstene størst i området utenfor Breiviksundet. Utslippsreduksjoner har ført til lavere konsentrasjoner av nitrogen, uten at det er påvist noen generell reduksjon av algeforekomsten i fjordsystemet i forhold til tidligere observasjoner i 1970-årene. Årsaken er trolig at algeveksten fortsatt hovedsakelig begrenses av andre faktorer, bl. a. vannutskifting.
