Abstract

Norske vassdrag forsures i økende grad. Smådyr på elvebunnen kan brukes til å klassifisere de biologiske forsuringsskadene. Rapporten beskriver klassifikasjonssystemene til Raddum og til Engblom/Lingdell. Begge baserer seg på tilstedeværelse/fravær av indikatorarter som gis indeksverdier etter deres forsuringstoleranse. Eksperimenter bekrefter hypotesen om at korte forsuringsepisoder kan gi store reduksjoner i et bunndyrsamfunn. Standardiserte tester viste enkelte bunndyrarters toleranse over surt vann (pH), surt vann med labilt aluminium og surt vann med humus. Generelt var døgnflueartene mest følsomme for surt vann. Deretter kom steinfluene, mens vårfluene var mest tolerante. Aluminium hadde gunstig innvirkning på overlevelsen av døgnfluen Baetis rhodani ved lav pH. Humus hadde gunstig innvirkning på overlevelsen til Baetis rhodani og marflo, Gammarus lacustris, i et surt miljø. Med bakgrunn i Raddums og Engblom/Lingdells systemer, andre nordiske arter samt egne feltdata, foreslår NIVA et sett indeksverdier som vil være gyldige ved forsuringsundersøkelser i de fleste norske vassdrag. Det gis en klasseinndeling fra 1 til 4, der 1 angir ikke forsuringsskadet og 4 gir sterkt forsuringsskadet lokalitet.
