Abstract

Sør-Varanger mottar betydelige mengder luftbårne svovelforbindelser fra smelteverkene i Nikel og Zapoljarvi. Påvirkningen er størst i området øst for Kirkenes. Mange små fjellvann øverst i vassdragene er sterkt forurenset. Nedover i vassdragene er bufferevnen bedre på grunn av løsavsetninger og tykkere jordsmonn. Tålegrensen for svovelbelastning var overskredet for ca 1/3 av 44 undersøkte småvann. Konsentrasjonen av nikkel og til dels kobber har en geografisk fordeling som samsvarer med sulfat. Det ble ikke registrert konsentrasjoner av tungmetaller som er akutt giftig for fisk, men subletale effekter av nikkel kan ikke utelukkes i det mest belastede området. Sedimentene var markert forurenset av kvikksølv og nikkel i de grensenære vassdrag syd for Jarfjorden. For resten av Sør-Varanger var forurensningen liten til moderat. Forurensningsgraden av kadmium og kobber var liten til moderat i hele området.
