Abstract

To hypoteser for forsuring av ferskvann diskuteres i dag. 1. Den "forsinkede respons" hypotese, og 2. Den "direkte respons" hypotese. Konsekvensen av den "forsinkede respons" hypotesen er at ved høy, men konstant tilførsel av sur nedbør vil flere og flere innsjøer og elver bli sure. Den "direkte respons" hypotesen innebærer at forsuringen er mer en momentan enn langsiktig prosess, og følgelig vil ikke forsuringen øke hvis ikke fremtidige tilførsler av sur nedbør øker. Surheten i nedbøren på Sørlandet økte med over 100% i forhold til tidligere år i midten av 1960- årene. En enkel analyse av dataserier for elver og feltforsknings- områder som inngår i programmet for overvåking av langtidstransport forurenset luft og nedbør, antyder at den "direkte respons" hypotesen gjelder for overflatevann i Sør-Norge. Fremtidige endringer i tilførselsmønstret for forurensninger bør føre til en ny likevekttilstand i løpet av 5-6 år. Målbare reduksjoner i tilførsler av sure stoffer vil derfor gi bedre forhold for fisk og andre organismer i vann.
