Abstract

ENGELSK: Development of advanced patient simulators has been tremendously over the last decades. Full-scale simulation is a teaching method that has been used increasingly in education and professional development. It has been proven to be a suitable method for practicing emergencies and especially with focus on Crisis resource management (CRM). How intensive care nurses perceive to participate in team training of emergencies is little described. Aim: of this study is to describe how intensive care nurses and students perceive to participate in full-scale simulation with focus on teamwork. Five groups of intensive care nurses and students participated in two scenarios with different emergencies. Focus group interviews were used for data collection. Analysis was done using qualitative content analysis. The findings consist of one theme and three categories with associated subcategories. The theme of the findings was that taking part in the simulation was both safe and unsafe, it was a learning situation, but also perceived as a test of their knowledge and skills and simulation was realistic and artificial at the same time. Categories were that the informers were tense to show their own performance. They perceived the simulation as challenging and educational. The situation was perceived as unfamiliar, and as both realistic and artificial to participate in the scenarios. The findings may help to increase the understanding of the complexity of full-scale simulation, and show the diversity of the participants' perceptions. The findings correspond with previous research. Further research should examine how knowledge from teamtraining can be better implemented in clinical practice. It would also be interesting to gain more knowledge about how full scale simulation can be adapted to be used towards larger groups.
