Drivere til vertikal integrasjon : forklaringer fra transaksjonskostnadsteori, ressursbasert teori og agentteori

Abstract

Denne studien er en systematisk replisering av studien til Gulbrandsen, Sandvik og Haugland (2009). Modellen videreutvikles med elementer basert på Chiles og McMackin (1996). Studien forklarer bedrifters valg om vertikal integrasjon gjennom en kombinasjon av transaksjonskostnadsteori, ressursbasert teori og agentteori. Etter at de tre teoretiske rammeverkene er presentert enkeltvis, argumenteres det for hvordan disse har komplementære forklaringer til vertikal integrasjon. Det utvikles to modeller med henholdsvis fire og åtte hypoteser. Forskningsmodellene testes empirisk i et heterogent og et homogent utvalg blant små foretak i Norge. Resultatene viser at de tre teoretiske perspektivene fungerer bedre sammen enn isolert. Avslutningsvis diskuteres teoretiske og ledelsesmessige implikasjoner. Basert på studien utvikles et ledelsesmessig verktøy som kan bidra til å styrke lederes beslutningsgrunnlag for valget om hvorvidt en aktivitet bør vertikalt integreres. Videre kommenteres studiens begrensninger og forslag til fremtidig forskning.
