Abstract

Denne monografien gir en innføring i etnometodologi som er et sosiologisk perspektiv med fokus på hvordan aktører samhandler i hverdagslivet, spesielt hvordan de nytter ulike metoder (Ethnomethods”) for å konstruere sosial orden og mening i tilværelsen. Fokus i fremstillingen ligger på en gjennomgang og drøfting av etnometodologi som et vitenskapsteoretisk ståsted med relevans for kvalitativ forskning. Det er lagt mindre vekt på å presentere etnometodologi som en empirisk forskningsgren. Bakgrunnen for det valget er at jeg gjennom metodeundervisning og sensurering erfarer at viderekomne studenter ofte har problemer med å knytte forbindelser mellom vitenskapsteoretiske perspektiver og valg av forskningsdesign. Begreper som fenomenologi, etnometodologi, grounded theory og hermeneutikk nyttes ofte retorisk, uten at det er klart hvordan de vitenskapsteoretiske forutsetningene som disse perspektivene eller tradisjonene bygger på, får konsekvenser for praktisk forskning. Formålet med monografien er derfor å gi studenter og andre interesserte innblikk i et mulig utgangspunkt for god kvalitativ forskning ved å synliggjøre styrker og svakheter i det etnometodologiske perspektivet.
