Bruk av leppfisk regnes som den eneste metoden for bekjempelse av lakselus som ikke har negative konsekvenser for miljøet. Bruken har økt kraftig de siste årene – i takt med problemene med lakselus. At lakselus enkelte steder har utviklet resistens mot flere av de kjemiske midlene mot lus, har ført til ytterligere fokus på leppefisk. I dag har vi ikke nok kunnskap til å fastslå om det nåværende fisket etter leppefisk er bærekraftig.
