Abstract

Als de LHC-versneller eenmaal goed op gang is, zullen er iedere seconde veertig miljoen pakketjes protonen elkaar kruisen in het hart van ieder van de vier experimenten. Per experiment kan de bundel scherp of juist iets minder scherp gefocust worden waardoor het aantal daadwerkelijkeproton-protonbotsingen kan variëren maar het tempo waarmee de pakketjes voorbij suizen blijft 40 MHz en dat dan ‘24/7’. In de praktijk komt dit uit op een gemiddelde van twintig uur per dag omdat de bundels na verloop van tijd opnieuw geïnjecteerd worden.
