Abstract

Wat zijn controversiële onderwerpen in het voortgezet onderwijs, in het bijzonder bij de schoolvakken geschiedenis en biologie? Vakdidactici en docenten werden geïnterviewd over welke onderwerpen door henzelf en door de leerlingen als controversieel werden ervaren en hoe docenten in de klas omgaan met deze onderwerpen. Het onderzoeklaat zien dat controversiële onderwerpen zowel in de schoolvakken zelf zitten als door leerlingen worden ingebracht. Docenten gaan voorzichtig om met deze controversiële onderwerpen, maar erkennen wel dat leerlingen veel kunnen leren van het met elkaar nadenken over controversiële onderwerpen. De onderzoekers pleiten voor meer aandacht in het onderwijs voor verschillende perspectieven op onderwerpen, ook als ze controversieel zijn.
