Abstract

(Gr. diaita ; Lat. victus “lifestyle.”) According to Celsus, dietetics – the adjustment of a patient's regimen , or lifestyle, to preserve or restore health – was one of the three branches into which medicine became divided after the time of Hippocrates (Cels. De Med. Prooem.9), and it permeated every aspect of life: diet, exercise, sexual activity, mental activity, and even what to wear (Hip. Epid. 6.8.23).
