Abstract

In the present work, there are described in a general manner, the characteristics of a fluid, the basic concepts of a flow, the definition of turbulence and the way that it can be represented in a simulation by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Furthermore, it is presented a methodology for calculating and obtaining drag coefficients due to wind, by using CFD, for cylinders with several aspect ratios (large/diameter). The analysis were performed with the aid of the commercial package ANSYS Workbench, version 11.0, ANSYS Inc., which includes a module specialized in the solution of fluid-structure interaction problems, that has the ability to carry out linear, non-linear, modal, spectral, stationary and transient analyses. Finally, it is presented a detailed example about the use of the mentioned software, as well as the advantages and disadvantages that this methodology represents against wind tunnel testing and its application on real scale structures.
