Síntesis y diseño de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales

Abstract

This thesis focuses on optimization, synthesis and design of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants for biological nutrient removal based on models applying mathematical programming techniques. Mathematical models of increasing complexity and rigor are developed, which solutions and insights gained are then analysed and successively used to pose, represent, and initialization and bounding of variables of the subsequent mathematical models. The final goal is to develop mathematical models based on a process superstructure to enable the implementation of algorithms to optimize the configuration and design of the treatment plant (process synthesis and design) and the operation variables for different scenarios of theoretical and practical importance. The present work aims to contribute to the development of more efficient technologies and / or processes with lower investment and operating costs. Most of the results presented and discussed here were published in the scientific community through publications and presentations at national and international congresses. It is expected that the results and products obtained with this thesis constitute a valuable tool for the design and optimization of "real" plants in particular, and for reducing the environmental impacts and for the efficient use of resources in general.
