De Barcelona a Atlanta: La evolución de la normalización del deporte adaptado

Abstract

Desde el conocimiento que da el haber colaborado, a través de la Fundación Saiatu, con los deportistas vascos que acudieron a los Juegos Paralímpicos celebrados en Atlanta el pasado verano, el autor del presente artículo reflexiona sobre el significado de las dos últimas citas olímpicas para personas con discapacidad. Mientras Barcelona 92 supuso un revulsivo para el movimiento asociativo catalán y un paso adelante en el proceso de normalización real, Atlanta 96 fue en ese sentido un auténtico fiasco, pues apostó por las leyes del mercado, pero el mercado le dio la espalda. A partir de esa constatación, el autor señala la imposibilidad de avanzar hacia la normalización sin pasar antes por etapas integradoras basadas en la discriminación positiva. De ello se deduce, como conclusión más importante de cara a la atención a las personas con discapacidad en nuestra comunidad, que la reglamentación deportiva vasca debe modificarse pues, siendo modelo de normalización es también, paradójicamente, obstáculo para la integración.
