Fauna del Eoceno de una localidad alicantina

Abstract

El yacimiento del Peñón de Umbría, situado en las estribaciones de la sierra de Aitana (Alicante) El terreno donde encontramos el yacimiento pertenece al Eoceno de la era terciaria. La mayoría de los fósiles encontrados están en perfecto estado, completos. Existe gran abundancia de Nummulites y Echinidos, no tanto en cuanto a la variedad de sus especies como al número de ejemplares, menor medida se han encontrado también, Lamelibranquios y Gasterópodos, hasta el punto de que casi toda la montaña y sus alrededores, están cubierto de una capa de estratos calizos impregnados de fósiles ricos en especies de Nummulites y afines estos últimos son importantes constructores de terreno. Siempre son circulares, planos o abombados y su talla entre los encontrados, está entre 40 mm. (los mayores) y 2mm.( los más pequeños). Este yacimiento dada su fácil localización es interesante para ir con los alumnos de segunda enseñanza de excursión. La mejor época para ir es la primavera ya que se pude aprovechar para el estudio de la rica flora del valle de Guadalest.
