Intervenciones con cuidadores de familiares mayores dependientes : una revisión

Abstract

Se revisan los estudios de intervención con cuidadores de familiares mayores dependientes. Se realizó una búsqueda en bases de datos nacionales (PortalMayores, Psicodoc, Psyke) e internacionales (Ageline, Cochrane Library, Medline, Psycinfo) de estudios aleatorizados, publicados entre 1980 y 2004, que intentan reducir el malestar emocional de los cuidadores. La mayoría de las intervenciones se centran en cuidadores de personas con demencia y los cuidadores suelen ser mujeres. Los cuidadores son un grupo de difícil acceso. Los objetivos y contenidos de las intervenciones varían mucho y no siempre están bien definidos. Los efectos encontrados son modestos. Se alcanzan resultados significativos en la reducción del malestar ante problemas conductuales, pero es difícil mejorar los niveles de depresión. Las intervenciones psicoterapéuticas son moderadamente eficaces. En conclusión, las futuras intervenciones deberían determinar con claridad el marco teórico, así como sus objetivos y utilizar unos períodos de seguimiento más amplios.
