Portugal na Monarquia dos Áustrias

Abstract

A integração de Portugal no complexo político conhecido como "Monarquia Católica (i.e., universal)" ou Monarquia dos Áustrias tem antecedentes na política de integração dinástica prosseguida pelas cortes portuguesa e castelhana desde os finais do séc. XV (Cunha, 1993). Na sequência da morte de D. Sebastião e do Cardeal-Rei, Filipe II de Espanha apresentava títulos sérios a herdeiro da coroa portuguesa. Os melhores juristas da época dividiram-se entre o seu partido e o da Duquesa de Bragança. Os interesses sociais e políticos em presença também se dividiam. Os senhores de terras aspiravam aos privilégios jurisdicionais dos senhores no reino de Castela. Os negociantes desejavam o acesso às Índias de Castela. A Igreja temia a sujeição ao regime tributário vigente em Espanha. As elites culturais eram atraídas pelo brilho da cultura castelhana. O povo miúdo participava de um anti-castelhanismo difuso. Os "homens de Estado" ponderavam os interesses de Portugal, que tanto podia lucrar com a integração num complexo político tão forte como a Monarquia do Rei Católico, como ser arrastado nos conflitos que ela mantinha (Bouza Álvarez, 1987).
