Marriage is an important milestone in the life of every person, Muslim and Muslim, including. It is usually preceded not only by the careful selection of the partner, but also by an agreement between the spouses (in fact also among their families) about the so-called mahr that a woman receives from the groom. What is mahr? It is not just a “common gift” for the bride, as it might seem at first glance. This legal institute must be viewed in the context of the whole Islamic family law, and at the same time show it from many sides – how it is legally regulated, what the practice of its negotiation can look like, what room of maneuver the fiancé has in an agreement on its size and what purpose it can serve. First of all, the book presents the partial rules relating primarily to the question of what may be the mahr, its amount, and the method of its transmission. But it also shows how mahr is closely related to divorce, the obligations and rights of spouses according to Islamic jurisprudence, and that not always a woman will receive it in the end. Perhaps, surprisingly, they may not get it at all. The reader has the opportunity to gradually penetrate into different corners of the legal regulation of the mahr and to take a picture of what role mahr can play in general or in a particular situation.
