The predominant amount of European coal deposits exploited underground is extracted by the longwall method with controlled caving. Experience shows that roadways, which ensure all transport and ventilation in coalfaces, restrict both output and safety, as well as economy in coal production. The problem is urgent especially in deep mining. The contribution describes procedures for designing the supports and stabilization measures using combined support in the already planned roadways on the base of system developed in the Ostrava Karvina Coalfield (OKR) in Czech Republic. The combined support in roadways combines roof bolting and standing (conventional) supports. The calculation of a load bearing capacity of roadway supports contains period of drivage and period of minig in the vicinity of roadways. The load bearing capacity of supports during drivage is based on the size of the natural arch, the loading of supports during mining comes out from a stress wave in rock mass in the forefront of the coalface and from the caving area of the mined out panel. The input data is deduced from external measurements.
