Abstract

As well as continuing to lead by example and multilateralism in takling environmental problems, the EU is also consciously and strategical ly using the trade and regulatory power granted by its Common Commercial Policy and its internal market to set environmental standards in al/ global value chains. Some of the most iconic recent examples of these unilateral measures are the establishment of a Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism or the adoption of a Regulation to combat deforestation. These types of measures have two main purposes: to reinforce the implementation of environmental multilateralism-from which they derive their legitimacy-and, with it, the universalisation of the goals of the European Green Deal; and to guarantee a level playing field far the European productive sector. These measures are controversial and could be challenged before the WTO Dispute Settlement System.
