Over recent decades, scientific progress in fisheries economics have essentially centred on two main approaches: the applications of the new institutional economics to the fishery management, and the best delimitation of international fishing rights and the incorporation of the uncertainty of stock under the bioeconomic approach. In the first case, the institutions are incorporated to the analysis; and decision levels, rules and process are identified. In the second case, on one hand, the transboundary character of fishing resources is analysed (both shared stocks by different countries and straddling stocks); and, on other hand, the precaution principle and the considerable interest aroused among economists on the establishment of marine is analysed.
