Abstract

A vacinación é unha das intervencións médicas máis importantes ao longo da historia. Dende o seu desenvolvemento por Edward Jenner a finais do século XVIII ata os nosos días, conseguiuse reducir a incidencia e mortalidade de numerosas enfermidades infecciosas dun xeito moi importante, sendo o seu maior logro, a erradicación da varíola no ano 1980. Actualmente, hai varias vacinas dispoñibles para previr enfermidades infecciosas ou para tratar cancros ou alerxias, pero a investigación segue moi activa na procura de vacinas eficaces para outras enfermidades frecuentes como a tuberculose e o infección por VIH. Coñecer e comprender mellor o noso sistema inmune é crucial para o desenvolvemento destas novas vacinas.
