Art and culture belong to those fields which are most important for functioning of each metropolis. The location of a given city on the cultural map of Europe depends on its music traditions, prestige of its artistic institutions, as well as on the number of educated musicians. The author of this paper has analyzed the current condition of the music culture of Łódź, reverting to historic circumstances of establishing those traditions. The article presents the most important metropolitan music institutions in Łódź (Filharmonia Łódzka, Teatr Wielki, Teatr Muzyczny, Akademia Muzyczna). Moreover, the article is an attempted assessment of strategies of promotion, as well as activities (including the analysis of artistic programme) aiming at development of the described institutions of culture. In order to depict these issues, subjective opinions of musicians of Łódź, concerning working conditions and career prospects in our city, have been presented.
