Abstract

Tertullianus adulta iam aetate fidem christianam adeptus - exinde toto animo eam profitens - defensor eius evasit fortissimus atque ardentissimus propugnator. Ipse vir eruditissimus, omni paene, quae tunc erat, disciplinarum scientia imbutus, atque a posteris „christianarum litterarum Latinarum pater" nomine laudabili ornatus - litterarum ąuoque scriptorum gentilium nec minime fuit ignarus. Quid autem de eis senserit, facile intellegi potest ex eius de omnis scientiae humanae iudicio, quae scientia quidem, ut fatetur, veritati inquirendae, veritati scilicet christianae, immo ipsi Christo, qui se ipsum Veritatem dixit, utilis esse eique inservire debeat. Hanc vero veritatis notam Tertullianus litteris saecularibus denegavit, immo potius et veritau et bonis moribus eas nocivas esse docuit, ipsosque earum auctores, utpote „gloriae cupidos", vituperat dicendo eos, postposita materia gravi, externam fere tantum formam co]uisse, quae pro nihilo est habenda. Attamen Tertullianus ipse (,,elocutionis artifex" etiam dictus), quamquam principium generale ei in scribendo erat: ,,qui verius, is melius" (idque pulchrius et ornatius), ubi ei placuit, etiam „lumina orationis" minime repudiavit, immo libenter ac splendide (,,rhetor christianus" quoque vocatus) in scriptis suis adhibebat.
