Abstract

Aims: To observe prevailing injuries in the oral mucous membrane in patients with nervous bulimia and/or nervous anorexia and to determine if there is a relationship between the injuries in the oral mucous membrane and eating disorders.Materlals and Methods: 65 patients with eating disorders were examined. 46 patients had nervous bulimia and 19 had nervous anorexia. All patients were female and their ages ranged from 12 to 32 years. The control group was made up of 65 female people aged 14 to 31 years without diagnosed eating disorders. Results: In the group of patients with eating disorders 61 patients had injuries in the oral rnucous rnembrane (94 porcentage) with 112 injuries in all; whereas in the control group only 12 patients (1 8.5 porcentage) had a total of 15 injuries in the oral mucous membrane. The most frequent injuries in the control group were exfoliative cheilitis (28 cases, 43.07 porcentage), lip erythema (28 cases, 43.07 porcentage), yellow palate (23 cases, 35.38 porcentage), purpuras (17 cases, 26.15 porcentage), cheek biting (12 cases, 18.26 porcentage) and unspecific palate atrophy (5 cases, 7.69 porcentage). In the control group the injuries occurred with the following frequency; exfoliative cheilitis (7 cases, 1 0. 77 porcentage), lip erythema (0 case, 0 porcentage), yellow palate (1 case, 1. 54 porcentage), purpuras (3 cases,4.62 porcentage), cheek biting (4 cases, 6.15 porcentage), and unspecific plate atrophy (0 case, 0 porcentage). According to the statistical analysis (Fisher Test) there are important statistical differences for each of the injuries in the observed group and in the control group (p<0.05).Conclusions: Tthe injuries in the oral mucous membrane in patients with nervous bulimia and /ornervous anorexia show a relationship with eating disorders and are useful for an early diagnosed guidance.
