Abstract

The lack of accessibility to public spaces and essential services for people with temporary or permanent reduced mobility poses significant difficulties for citizens in general, especially those who use wheelchairs. Architectural obstacles, unevenness and terrain obstructions are just a few examples of the barriers faced by these people in their daily routines. This study aimed to identify the needs of active people who use wheelchairs and face a lack of urban accessibility daily. In addition, it sought to understand how design can contribute creatively to solving these problems, integrating itself into a context of design's social responsibility. This context aims to direct the work towards inclusive and universal design, which considers ethical and social concerns, seeking to promote social sustainability. The dissertation is organized into six chapters. Chapters 1 to 5 deal with the state of the art, an up-to-date review of knowledge, a critical and systematic analysis of the literature and a case study - the Municipality of Amarante. Chapter 6 refers to the development of the product design project, which involves two auxiliary products that can function independently or simultaneously for wheelchairs. These assist in overcoming unevenness/slopes found in the urban environment on pavements, building entrances and uneven pavements, in increasing citizens' levels of comfort and quality of life.
