Abstract

The approach to the proposed theme was carried out through the elaboration of a bibliographic and monographic research on the historical period of the building of the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo in Estremoz, through the gathering of available information, analyses and interpretations that, to date, had been written about the historical period between 1570, in which the foundation and the beginning of the firstworks are registered, and 1730, the date of its conclusion. Visits were made to the building, sketching on site and its surroundings as well as a search for photographic elements, in order to establish chronological comparisons and understand which architectural historical period it is inserted in, and what are its architectural influences. A biographical survey of the architectural complex of the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo was also proposed, as well as the elaboration, if possible, of a survey of cut plans and elevations. This was carried out to better understand this architectural heritage. These thesis aims to investigate, resolve and answer whether there are influences and characteristics of Chã Architecture in the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria do Castelo, and in which period of historical-architectural influence this building best belongs. It is also proposed to minimize the absence of monographic studies on qualified buildings from this period between 1521 – 1760. Ultimately, it is intended to understand the possible influences and similarities that can be taken from the Chã Architecture, for the buildings that were not investigated until then, or that are in an architectural qualitative uncertainty.
