Azulejaria de Maria Keil : obra pública

Abstract

It was intended for this thesis, to be around the public work of Maria Keil’s tiles, one of the most well-known names in Portuguese decorative tiles on the second half of the 20th century. We attempted to understand better her public works, particularly the tile panels in some of Lisbon’s Metro Stations and in the Avenida Infante Santo’s that are considered her most relevant works. These works were analyzed with her tile production in mind, related to the language seen in Neorealism and Geometric Abstractionism; comparing her works to other artists of her time; considering the social and cultural context; and his connection with traditional Portuguese tile work (which techniques and traditional elements that were used in a manner that transformed the way we perceive modern design). This investigation was accomplished with the intention of analysing these works from the point of view of Design History (beyond Art History and Architecture History). The tile panels referred before are contemplated daily by people, during their normal routines, and are objects that generate environments and communication. There was also an attempt to find out all of Maria Keil’s public works to spread this modern artist’s work to the public and specially to the new generations of artists, architects, and designers that are interested in working for the public space.
