Abstract

Within the scope of the Dissertation, a study was carried out to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism sector, specifically in terms of the management of smart and sustainable tourism. With the COVID-19 pandemic, habits were changed and, in this way, all sectors of activity were affected, in a greater or lesser degree, with the tourism sector being one of the sectors in which the effects were specially felt. In this sense, it was important to assess the main consequences resulting therefrom and the way in which the sector was prepared to react to an adversity of this nature and the mechanisms that were used to deal with it. In the context of the study that was carried out, a quantitative methodology was followed to collect data and test hypotheses, the sample being made up of final consumers who make tourism in Portugal. The study carried out resulted in important conclusions, highlighting the evidence of the perception that the social benefits associated to the tourism sector outweigh the perception of the social costs associated with it, even in a pandemic context. In this way, it is concluded that the perception of the social benefits/costs dichotomy was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining the perception that, even in a context of great difficulty for the sector, the social benefits that emerge from the sector of tourism exceed the social costs deriving from it.
