Abstract

The main goal of this study was to understand and describe the perception of self-image and body satisfaction in the well-being of adolescents. For data collection, it was used the survey on young people’s behaviours and health, adopted by the 2018’s Health Behaviour School Aged Children (HBSC) international study, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The survey was applied to a sample of 1045 students, 47.8% female and 52.2% male, who attended the 6th and 8th year of schooling in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, aged between 11 and 20 years old (M = 13.10, SD = 1.48). Variables related to eating habits, body image, physical activity, family, and family environment were analysed. Collected data revelaed that girls have a bigger perception of their abdominal waist, when compared to boys, who have more physical activity, had a higher consumption of cokes and are more comfortable to talk with their fathers. The 8th grade students showed a higher body mass index (BMI), a worse body perception, and a higher consumption of sweets and colas compared to the 6th grade students. Students who reported dieting had a higher BMI, a worse perception of their body and perceived their waistline as larger than those who did not diet. Adolescents with a good perception of their bodies reported doing more physical activity, consuming more fruits and vegetables, are more comfortable to talk with their parenta, have better family relations and receive more family support. This study emphasizes that the awareness of young people regarding their eating behaviours is essential, and that the sociocultural context, namely the family, is fundamental in matters of both physical and mental health, so that the adolescent can have a better self-image and self-satisfaction.
