Abstract

Abstract: “The Wabi Sabi and the Chã Architecture – The Assimilation of Traditions in to the Contemporaneyty” consist in a comparative study between the Wabi Sabi Japanese Buddhist philosophy, the Portuguese Genius Loci and, their respective vernacular architectures. Thereby, it is intended to enhancing the Genius Loci, in a sustainable and economical way, through a return to constructive traditions, while part of the contemporary language. To enable the contemporary architecture integration in the urban, rural or nature environment, a study is made about the Japanese and Portuguese culture, the incisive factors in each one of them and, in what way the vernacular architecture of these two countries reflect their culture, given that, the latter have comparable basic criteria between them. The introduction of the Critical Regionalism theory in the development of an architecture project, emerge has an assimilation method of those traditions, on an actual context, making them timeless. That can be verified on the work of the contemporary architects Kengo Kuma and Álvaro Siza Vieira. Whit the study made on the two cultures and vernacular architectures, it is understood that, although they formally distinguish between them, it does not prevent the existence of similarities in basic criteria of both architectures. The same occurs in the actuality, as well as on the two architect’s work studied. Although they derive from different cultures, academic educations and, career paths, they both reach the same work method, principals and values, regardless of presenting different architectural languages and solutions.
