After the last century, characterized by the growing need for technological advances and evolutions that have had repercussions on sudden changes, even in architecture, we now see the emerging need to reverse two main dichotomous problems. The rehabilitation of the old patrimony left to the abandonment and the recovery of the cultural value that it entails, and on the other hand to try to solve the unsustainability created in the construction sector. The eagerness for modernity caused not only the abandonment of the old building, in the rural areas as well as in the historical centers, but it also contributed to the abandonment of the traditional architecture, rooted in its natural and geographical context to the detriment of a global architecture that was reproduced in a non-judgmental manner throughout the world. This decontextualization between the architecture and the surrounding space has helped to cause numerous problems at the environmental level and at the level of poor efficiency and ecologically correct behavior in buildings. Within this context, it is not only relevant to rehabilitate the old building as the first sustainable act in the architecture, but also to analyze and synthesize a large part of the passive strategies and the traditional built solutions, inherent to the vernacular construction, which in an empirical way converge in the paradigm of sustainability in architecture.

Após o último século, caraterizado pela crescente necessidade de progresso e evoluções tecnológicas que repercutiram em mudanças repentinas inclusive na arquitetura, constata-se agora a emergente necessidade de reverter dois principais problemas dicotômicos. A reabilitação do património antigo deixado ao abandono e a recuperação do valor cultural que o mesmo acarreta, e por outro lado procurar solucionar a insustentabilidade criada no sector da construção. A ânsia pela modernidade causou não só o abandono do edificado antigo, tanto nas áreas rurais como nos centros históricos, como também contribuiu para o abandono da arquitetura tradicional, enraizada ao seu contexto natural e geográfico em detrimento de uma arquitetural de cunho global que foi sendo reproduzida de maneira não criteriosa por todo o mundo. Esta descontextualização entre a arquitetura e o espaço envolvente ajudou a acarretar inúmeros problemas a nível ambiental e a nível de má eficiência e comportamento ecologicamente correto nos edifícios. Dentro deste contexto torna-se não só relevante reabilitar o edificado antigo como o primeiro ato sustentável na arquitetura, como também analisarmos e sintetizarmos uma grande parte das estratégias passivas e das soluções construídas tradicionais, inerentes ao edificado vernáculo, que de forma em empírica convergem no paradigma de sustentabilidade na arquitetura.
