Abstract

This work is focused on the concern of developing a shelter on the Portuguese Inland Way of St. James, namely in the municipalities of Chaves and Montalegre. We start with the theoretical and practical problems related to minimal and modular architecture. Our work follows three basic ideas: the relationship hetween Man, Nature and shelter, the revaluation of the culture of Trás-os-Montes through restoration of the Ways of St. James, and lastly, the completion of shelters in an adaptable modular system whieh wiII respond to the basic needs of Man and the characteristics of the territory. The first idea results from the idea of pilgrimage and journey which enhances the sense of self-discovery and self-improvement of Man through a journey in natural and patrimonial environments. It consists in the preparation shelters associated with a trail, surrounded mostly by nature that will promote more human and intimate relationships. The second idea results from the desire to restore and add value to the Portuguese Inland Way of St. James, in order to promote and bring up-to-date the culture, tradition and customs of Trás-os-Montes, as well as its human and natural values. Finally, in a manner that is sustained and integrated with the previous ideas, our objective is to create a minimal modular shelter that is aggregated and varied, that responds to various challenges with a formal and material simplicity, easily adaptable to any morphology and territorial topography, along with rapid construction and maintenance. For the preparation of this work we weighted the importance of the exploratory studies on location, cartographic surveys, information gathered in the official entities of the territory under study and the research of bibliographical references.
