Abstract

Most existing studies on medieval architecture focus on the religious or defensive type of architecture, whether they limit themselves to the portuguese territory or to the whole european continent. But there is one kind of medieval architecture often relegated to a second plan: civil architecture. The amount of studies about dwellings of that period is substancially smaller than that dedicated to their most monumental congeners, and more often than not they are approached superficially, included in analysis of urban clusters. The rarity of those studies increases if we search for data about a specific location, such as Porto. Being an urban centre of such ancient origins, is holds a considerable medieval-rooted heritage, worthy of attention. Yet all information is scattered, making it difflcult to find a list of the medieval houses of Porto. With this work I intend to contribute to fill in that gap, through two different approaches: by the architectural characterization and the registration of the historial of the medieval civil buildings in the city, and by a deeper analysis of the specific case of a rehabilitated and fully functioning medieval building, through which I will try to establish a relation ofcontinuity between the past and the present.
