Arquitectura recombinante nos centros históricos

Abstract

Architecture must fulfill the role of serving the humanity of useful and representative spaces of today's society. But when we turn to the historical centres there are only guidelines for space conservation, missing the elements for preservation the memory of a polyvalent and sustainable center. This research study highlights the problem of the downgrading trajectory of the historic centers towards the new way of living of contemporary society and as a response to the challenges and consecutive changes we explore new instrumental configurations that make possible a new view at the way we use and acknowledge historic centers, importing the concept of Genetic Recombination to Architecture knowledge, to create a recombinant strategy that enables the (re)activation of connections lost over time in the historical centers and its surroundings. As the foundation for applying the concept of recombinant architecture in historic centers, we conducted a project-test, in the historic center of Amarante city, which exemplify the implementation of the strategy, first with a wider vision and finally directing the project to develop a set of equipment that will create new combinations in the historic fabric, safeguarding the preexistings structures, ensuring a functional recovery and a well-defined implementation with the urban surroundings. The application of this concept directly in the historic centers stems from a need to reposition the architects way of thinking, creating a strategy that is systemic and continuously, that allows the application of tools that adapt the historical centers to the context of society evolution.
