Abstract

A deficiência visual coloca desafios adicionais ao nível da adaptação dos indivíduos, com potencial de afectar o bem-estar subjectivo dos indivíduos portadores desta condição. Este estudo examinou o Bem-estar subjectivo (satisfação com a vida, qualidade de vida relacionada com a saúde mental, tonalidade emocional e satisfação com o suporte social) em crianças e jovens com deficiência visual. Participaram neste estudo 388 crianças e adolescentes. O grupo com deficiência visual foi constituído por 33 adolescentes com cegueira e baixa-visão, com idades compreendidas entre os 10 e os 20 anos que frequentavam o sistema de ensino a partir do 2° ciclo até ao 12° ano. O grupo sem deficiência visual incluiu 355 crianças e adolescentes que não apresentavam deficiência visual, com idades compreendidas entre os 4 e os 20 anos, e frequentavam o sistema de ensino desde o pré-escolar até ao 12° ano de escolaridade. Os resultados indicaram a não existência de diferenças ao nível do Bem-estar Subjetivo total nem ao nível de nenhum dos indicadores do bem-estar. Os resultados, as limitações do estudo e as implicações para a prática são discutidos.

Abstract: Visual impairment poses additional challenges to the adaptation of individuals with the potential to affect the subjective weIl-being of individuals with this condition. This study examined the Subjective well-being (life satisfaction, quality of life related to mental health, ernotional tone and satisfaction with social support) in children and youth with visual impairment. 388 children and adolescents participated in this study. The visually irnpaired group consisted of 33 adolescents with blindness and low-vision, aged between 10 and 20 years, attended lhe regular education system from the 5th grade to 12th grade. The group who had no visual irnpairment, included 355 sighted children and adolescents, aged between 4 and 20 years and attended the regular education system from pre-school to 12th grade. Results indicated no differences regarding the total level of Subjective well-being as well in each one of the well-being indicators. The results, the studys limitations and implications for practice are discussed.
