Património escondido : preservação dos estuques do Porto

Abstract

Abstract: The use of plaster elements has a long history, and yet, with the Baroque, its use is intensified. This dissertation seeks to enhance the art of plaster by making a contribution to the theoretical reflection, still very scarce in this area, as well as examine how this should be preserved and restored or reinterpreted within the buildings of the past. According to this purpose, we proceeded to the conceptualization of the art of plaster and we studied the problematic issue of architectural heritage preservation. We also proceeded to the analysis of its technical conception and recovery. We focused on the city of Oporto and its peculiarities. For a better understanding of the problem of plaster preservation, two recovery interventions in private homes located in the city were described and we had the opportunity to follow them. It was concluded that efforts have been made to preserve the plaster in public buildings as well as the dissemination of this art. We recognize the cultural importance and its architectural value. However, in most of the private buildings, its recovery hasn’t been performed, leading to the destruction of much hidden assets, since the decision of its substitution by cheaper materials of rapid implementation has been a frequent option. Finally, we point out the need to qualify technicians called to intervene in this sector, as well as the need for theoretical and technical studies.
