Abstract

Abstract: The present piece of research is the outcome of thorough analyses and surveys aimed at enlightening the reader about the subject of wood. With this in mind, it has been based, firstly, on more general questions related to architectural disciplines and secondly, it uses more specific aspects of the same disciplines in order to enable the reader to understand more easily and with greater clarity the rest of the work in its constructive form. A brief historical study of the different periods of the use of wood in construction is followed by a study of the importance of this raw material in different cultures and an explanation of the systems of construction of their stereotomic forms. All the knowledge obtained by reading this report will allow the reader a broader perspective and greater sensitivity to works which are presented as an expression of a precise poetic and aesthetic character. Light, soft, shiny and dark at times; rhythmical, symmetrical, asymmetrical, part of a whole or singular – all these works stand out as unique and unrepeatable. The ultimate aim of our research is to, hopefully, benefit the readers in the enhancement of their knowledge of the themes we have mentioned and contribute to the discipline of building ideas, forms and uses appropriately without ignoring the symbolic dimension which these elements embody.
