Tripanosomiasis canina en Latinoamérica: Revisión de literatura

Abstract

Trypanosomiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan parasite of the genus Trypanosoma, which is present in Latin America due to its tropical environment and the large presence of vectors. It can affect both humans and animals of various species such as canines, equines, bovines, among others. Its clinical presentation varies from an acute phase to the chronic phase, resulting in heart disease, which in many cases can cause sudden death. The most affected population is the one that lives in conditions that allow the proliferation of the vector with houses built in recyclable or rudimentary materials and where there are many dogs, many times without any type of health and control, making them a great danger to the man because they can carry the parasite into the home. A literature review was carried out with the aim of obtaining relevant information on trypanosomiasis and in which countries there is a presence of the vector. To obtain this information, databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SciElo, Springer, Web of Science and Scopus were used using keywords. It could be concluded that the information in canines is scarce, more clinical studies are needed to detect the disease in time and implement timely treatment. Although there is presence of the vector in much of Latin America the reports of cases with this pathology are limited, so it should have greater vigilance as it may be misdiagnosing or even not diagnosed. Research progress should focus on implementing effective preventive treatment and measures against this disease as one does not yet exist.
