Abstract

The reduction of several contaminants from the source of water supply for human consumption was evaluated, before the purification process of the city of Pereira, using different configurations of artificial wetlands (CW) at laboratory scale, to remove Turbidity (T ), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Fecal Coliforms (FC). For this, raw water from the Otún River was used, prior to entering the plants, and it was entered through eight (8) fiberglass tanks, 0.3mX0.8mX0.6m (BxLxP). The wetlands were evaluated with two (2) types of flow, surface and subsurface, two (2) filter media, gravel and sand, and planted (Junco Scirpus SP) and not planted. The CWs had a constant flow of 19.2 L/d, feeding raw water to the treatments, using a weekly sampling program in the influent and effluent of each wetland, monitoring the T, the COD and the CF, and the parameters of field, pH, temperature and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP); additionally, Color, Iron, Alkalinity and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were analyzed. The results showed statistically significant removals, greater than 45% for T, greater than 40% for COD, and greater than 80% for CF, which show the great utility that the full-scale implementation of this technology can have in previous water purification processes, by significantly reducing the organic and pathogenic load that enters the treatment systems, thus allowing the reduction of the consumption of chemical inputs and the costs associated with them Magíster en Ecotecnología
